MINUTES OF THE WELLNESS MEETING

April 19, 2005

The Wellness meeting held on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at the Nenana Senior Center was called to order by Kat McElroy at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Tim Horn opened the meeting with prayer, followed by the pledge of allegiance to the flag.  As there was no Agenda available, Kat summarized the Wellness’ Mission Statement.

Vickie Moyle, new director for the Senior Center, was welcomed.

Discussion was held as to whether or not we should continue to having our Thursday evening meeting ahead of the City Council meeting, as we have fewer people coming to those meetings and the last three Council meetings have not been held for lack of a quorum.

Vickie Moyle asked that the Wellness Agenda be sent to the Senior Center email. She will send that email address when she finds it.

Milt Haken gave information regarding the basketball camps Barbara Berry will be holding, probably the second week in August, even though Nenana teams probably will not be able to participate as the coaches will not be here at that time.  Several villages have shown an interest.  There will four boys and girls teams involved for seven days.  Karen Lord hopes to have something for the Nenana students after the Student Living kids are back.  It is hoped this will be the first annual basketball camp i.e. there will other ones to follow.

Milt Haken also said there is an inexpensive way to get books through book club by downloading them by becoming a member at   ..com.

Miles Martin said that the City Library now has a Community Bookshelf, so if anyone or organization has a book you would like to have at the Library, let Darcia Grace know and she will get it and it will be available to be checked out.

Kat said that Kari Frazier had attended the Real Justice training and was impressed. Roy Smart and Don Charlie were among the twenty-four attending, with about 1/3 being youth.  Roy and Don explained how the training was held. Roy reported that there has already been a youth court held, even before the training, and it was very successful.  As a follow-up there was a talking circle held at the Living Center with 40 participating when the offender went before the students and apologized.

Kat suggested that we have a short presentation on Real Justice at one of our community dinners and have a demonstration at one of the Wellness meetings.

Moses Paul talked briefly about the Cultural Center.

Endil Moore reported that Vickie Moyle is the new director for the Senior Center.

The Nenana Community Church had donated the 30 new chairs on Saturday.

The Captains are in and the crews will be coming in over the weekend.  The barge season looks good and it is hoped that their first barge will be leaving on May 24.

The Highway between miles 325 to 357 will be being resurfaced this summer so plan your trips accordingly.

There have been offers to buy out several barge lines, but it is hoped that Yutana will continue to be independent.

The City Council will be meeting on Wednesday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Senior Center to replace the meeting that was not held on Thursday, April 14 for lack of a quorum.  Endil also reported that the Council appreciates having community members attend the meetings.

Mayor Jason Mayrand is working with the Native Council on the all purpose facility going up with the city contributing through a community development grant.

There will be an Ice Watch Picnic at the beach on April 26 at Noon. Since this is the same time the Wellness usually meets, it was decided we should support the picnic.

There will be an Ice Classics meeting at the Civic Center on Thursday, April 21 beginning at 5:30.

The Ice Classics is looking for bids on watering the flowers at the Civic Center this year and also bids for catering the Annual meeting to be held on June 14.

Don Charlie announced that he would be unable attend meetings for the next three weeks as he will be out of town taking training.

Norma George announced that according to an announcement made at school today there will not be a cultural day on Friday, April 22.

Kat said that the Railbelt Mental Health was in the middle of doing grants and that is what keeps them going.  She also said she had attending training and had seen a Wildhorse Resort by the Pema Indians and she thought of how they are keeping their culture alive and how using the culture here in Nenana as a tourist attraction.

Miles Martin announced that he and Diane Jensen will be attending the tourism conference being held at Pike’s Landing in Fairbanks on Wednesday and Thursday.

Vickie Moyle announced that April Mudge was at the Senior Center at noon to look for the students could do plays or something for the Seniors.

Vickie Moyle announced that the food boxes for Seniors and needy families are presently being picked up by the Senior bus, but Vickie would like to have someone else picking up the ones for the needy families and have the Senior Center only responsible for picking up and delivering the ones for the Seniors.

Roy Smart will be consulting with her.

She also announced that as soon as a building policy for use of the Senior Center is available, those using the building will receive a copy.

The meeting adjourned at 1:50 p.m. There will be no meeting held at the Senior Center on Tuesday, April 26, as that is when the Ice Watch picnic is being held at the river.

Those attending: Kat McElroy, Tim Horn, Moses Paul, Vickie Moyle, Norma George, Milt Haken, Margaret Sanders, Mae Jensen, Miles Martin, Blaine and Bonnie Reed, Endil Moore, Donald Charlie, and Roy Smart.
